Thoth 0.3.0: report a problem, and see what you send
Thoth 0.3.0 makes it easier to tell us what went wrong, without giving anything away. The desktop app now keeps a small log of errors, and you decide whether a problem report includes it, after you have read it.
A small log on your computer
The desktop app writes errors, crashes and app starts to a log file on your computer, about 3 MB at most. It is built to leave out page text and titles, and it masks file paths, links and email addresses before anything is written.
The log stays on your computer. Thoth has no analytics and never sends your notes anywhere you didn't choose. On its own, the app only checks for a new version and fetches previews of links in your pages. You can turn both off in Settings.
Include it in a problem report
Open Settings → Help and feedback → "Send feedback…". The dialog has a new box, "Include recent app log". It is off every time you open the dialog.
Tick it and the dialog shows every line that would be sent, before you send anything. Read it, untick it if you change your mind, or send. The log goes only to the server your feedback goes to: your own, or the demo server you added.
Save it to a file
No server? Settings → Help and feedback → "Save diagnostics…" saves the same log, with the app version and system, to a file you can attach to an email.
How to get it
From 0.2.3, click Update when the app tells you 0.3.0 is out. From 0.2.2 or older, install it from the download section. The changelog lists every change.
Questions
Does Thoth send my log anywhere on its own?
No. The log leaves your computer only when you tick "Include recent app log" and send. It never goes to a third party.
Can the log contain something private?
It is built to leave out page text and titles, and it masks file paths, links and email addresses. An error message can still quote a few words, so the dialog shows you every line first. Untick the box if you see anything private.
I run my own server. Do I need to do anything?
Update the server to 0.3.0 to receive the log. An older server still takes your feedback; if you include the log, the app asks you to untick it and send again.
