Thoth 0.2.3: the desktop app updates itself

Thoth 0.2.3 lets the desktop app update itself. When a new version is out, click Update: Thoth downloads it, checks that Thoth signed it, installs it, and asks before it restarts.

Update in one click

The popup that tells you about a new version now has an Update button. A bar shows how much has downloaded, and Cancel stops it.

When the download is done, choose Restart now or Later. Restart now saves your edits first, and the new version opens the Private Space you had open.

If a save fails, Thoth does not restart and tells you why. If an assistant is still working, Thoth says so and lets you choose.

Only files Thoth signed

Every update is signed with Thoth's own key, and the app checks that signature before it installs anything. A file that is not signed, or not signed by Thoth, is never installed.

The download comes only from download.thothnotes.com, over a secure connection. If anything goes wrong, the popup says what happened and offers the downloads page.

You stay in charge

Nothing downloads until you click Update. The app still asks only which version is newest, once when it opens and once a day while it stays open.

In Settings → Updates, turn off "Download and install updates in the app" to keep the Download button. Turn off "Tell me when a new version is out" and the app asks nothing at all.

Where it works

On macOS, Windows and the Linux AppImage. A Windows installer replaces the app with the same kind of installer you used, MSI or setup program.

A .deb install on Linux keeps the Download button, because updating it needs an administrator password.

How to get it

If you have 0.2.2 or older, install 0.2.3 from the download section once; the app tells you it is out. From 0.2.3 on, updates happen in the app. The changelog lists every change.

Questions

Does Thoth update without asking?

No. It downloads only when you click Update, and it restarts only when you choose Restart now.

What if I do not want automatic downloads at all?

Turn off "Download and install updates in the app" in Settings → Updates. The popup then opens the downloads page, as before.
