Thoth 0.1.0: the first desktop release

Thoth 0.1.0 is the first release of the desktop app, for macOS and Linux. It keeps your notes as Markdown files in a folder on your computer, gives you two editors for the same file, and imports your notes from Notion and Obsidian.

Your notes are a folder of Markdown files

Your Private Space is a folder you choose. Every page is a .md file in it, and Thoth keeps its search index in a small .thoth folder beside them.

It works offline and needs no account. If you stop using Thoth, the files stay readable in any text editor.

Two editors for one file

Blocks is a block editor. Type / for the slash menu, drag a block by its handle, and fold long parts into toggles.

Plain shows the Markdown text itself, with a live preview. Both edit the same file: switch with Ctrl+Shift+E (Cmd+Shift+E on a Mac), and text you did not touch is never rewritten.

Type [[ in either editor to link to another page.

Bring your notes from Notion and Obsidian

Import a Notion “Markdown & CSV” export or an Obsidian vault, as a folder or a ZIP. Links between pages are kept.

A report lists anything that could not come across, such as Notion formulas and views, so nothing goes missing without a word.

Shared workspaces on a Thoth server

Connect the app to a Thoth server to open its workspaces. Members are owners, editors or viewers, and earlier versions of each page are kept.

Every save is checked against the version you opened. If someone else changed the page, you choose: Keep mine, Keep theirs or Keep both.

The web app opens workspaces on the free demo server, with limits. Your Private Space needs the desktop app, because a browser cannot keep a folder of files on your computer.

In English and Thai

The app follows your system’s language, and you can change it in Settings → Language.

How to get it

The download section always has the newest version, which includes everything in 0.1.0. This release was for macOS 11 or newer (Apple silicon and Intel) and 64-bit Linux, as an AppImage or a .deb.

The builds are not code-signed yet, so your system asks once before the first launch. The changelog lists every change.

Questions

Is Thoth free?

Yes. Thoth is open source under the Apache-2.0 license, and the app, the server and the protocol cost nothing.

Does Thoth 0.1.0 run on Windows?

Not this version. The Windows app arrived in Thoth 0.1.3.
